SMS is a message that can make reference to different concepts. Its most common use, anyway, is associated with the English notion of Short Message Service (which can be translated as “short message service”).

SMS, therefore, is the cell phone service (mobile) which makes it possible to send and receive text messages of reduced extension. Also referred to as SMS to these messages themselves.

Developed in the mid- 1980’s, the original SMS allowed to create messages of between 140 and 160 7-bit characters. Over time, the service began to include other options, like the possibility to add beyond the text contents or to join different messages to extend the length.

The processing of the SMS is produced in the Short Message Service Center (SMSC). To make such processing possible, every message includes data such as the phone number of the recipient and the sender, the date in which occurred the shipping, etc.

Due to the immediacy of contact and that are more economical than engage a voice communication via phone, SMS you are massed around the world and even led to major social changes.

The limitation of the space to write, for example, gave rise to a new language based on abbreviations. The popularity of SMS and mobile phones, also drove the development of a new form of advertising: the companies sent their promotions and offers through this type of messages.

With the advent of smartphones, the importance of the SMS began to decline. Although currently you still have a place in the world of telecommunications, the possibilities offered by the systems of instant messaging via mobile phones are much higher; for example, while the phone companies tend to offer hundreds of free messages per month to its customers, programs such as WhatsApp or Telegram are always free and do not have a limit of messages, all of this without forgetting that they allow to send all kinds of files, including videos and images, as well as the recording of voice messages.

The SMS has evolved over time to offer called MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service, which can be translated as “Multimediamessaging service”), thanks to which it is possible the sending and receiving of mixed content, which can include pictures, sound and video. One of the benefits of the MMS is that it also allows to send messages directly to e-mail accounts. However, despite its potential, the limit for each message does not usually exceed the 300 KB, an insignificant number compared to other services, especially within the framework of mobile applications.

But technological advances in mobile phones and communication networks have failed to completely eliminate the presence or the SMS utility, since still today the adoption of smartphones is not absolute. On the other hand, the fear of attacks such as identity theft makes many people avoid systems like WhatsApp and continue using SMS to feel safer. In addition, it remains a more private medium, as it does not give more information than the telephone number of the sender to the receiver, and does not allow you to know if you are connected in the same way that the latter cannot know if the recipient has read your messages.
